Once you have developed your website it is important to let search engines know that, your website exists and that it is ready for indexing. When you submit your website to a search engine they add your URL to an index file.

When search engines ‘crawl’ the web they are adding your website and web pages to their database of websites. Each search engine has their own schedule of crawling the web which can range anywhere from 1-3 months or even up to a year.
When a search engine has indexed your website it uses your meta data, page titles, web page content, etc. in ranking results for search queries. Keep in mind, search engines just like you, do not like to be spammed that is why it is good practice to submit your website and individual web pages periodically; quarterly submissions are good practice.
It is important to note that if websites and a number of web pages are submitted too often, some search engines will not index them.
