Guestbook is a program that allows users to post a comment on your website. Unlike blogs, they don't require user registration. Users are allowed to simply enter the basic details such as their name, email and a comment in order to leave a post.
A guestbook allows users to leave feedback regarding your site which could be a positive remark or simply a question or concern. This is a great method for getting feedback on your website that may expose areas on your website that need improvement.
The popularity of guestbooks has drastically declined in recent years especially with the rise of blogs. One area of concern with guestbooks is the ability to spam a guestbook.
Since there isn't a registration process, it's open game for spammers to leave messages from Viagra and casinos to porn related comments.
I did a bit of research and found that a some of the free guestbook software out there has put measures in place to reduce spam and allow you to customize the guestbook to fit theme of your website. A couple that I located can be found at phpBook and GuestFriend.
